Fiji25 Blog 11- Ellis
The main activity from our day was going to the local school and doing different types of service, specifically teaching about consent to the 3rd and 4th year students and building an enclosure for the schools two sheep (still TBD exactly why the elementary school has pregnant sheep??). While we were loitering and waiting for our next task we were able to see some of the service work from the past GSL Fiji trips. These were things like the original sheep enclosure which was not suited for an expecting mother as well as the patch of dry dirt that was apparently a garden at some point made by the very first lakeside group to visit Nanuku, which included one of our own leaders.
Our time here, though still not long, has taught us about
the value of a community that supports each other and works together to create
change. These values carry through to every part of life in the village, from
sharing sugar with your neighbor and inviting everyone for an endless supply of
tea. The people here care deeply about everyone and everything around them. Today
at school we were accompanied by many people from the village who came to help without
being asked or paid. They came to simply to help those around them. We were all
able to build something that wouldn’t have been possible without the help of
the community and will (hopefully) outlive our time in Nanuku, just like the
past groups have done.
